Lanky Girl’s 5 best events to check out this Spring and Summer

Are you planning to visit London in the next few months? Well if you are anything like me when I am planning on visiting somewhere new, you have probably already been checking out which hotels to stay in and what to do when you arrive. London events season is just starting to take off and with so many events happening this spring and summer it may be hard to choose what do. However don’t panic, Lanky Girl is here to help! In this post I will be giving you the low down on what events you should be checking out should you find yourself in London this season.

Places to stay

Start your search for a place to stay by narrowing down which part of London you want to stay in. Try to pick somewhere that isn’t more than 45 mins from Central London. My favourite sites for looking for accommodation are lastminute and Hotel Direct.

Vikings life and legend at The British Museum

Friends who have already been to this exhibition have raved about how good it is. Vikings life and legend is the first major exhibition on Vikings at the British Museum for over 30 years. Visitors are in for a treat as the exhibition features many new archaeological discoveries and objects never seen before in the UK and focuses on the core period of the Viking Age from the late 8th century to the early 11th century. For history buffs it is an exhibition not to be missed as it will probably not take place again for a long time.

Vikings, Life legend is on at the British Museum until the 22nd of June and due to the amount of interest it has already generated booking is advised!

Regents Park Open Air Theatre

Regent’s Park Open theatre is a firm fixture of the summer season in London and is your chance to experience English theatre performed in an open auditorium. Pack yourself a picnic and watch everything from Shakespeare to musicals in one of London’s prettiest green spaces, Regent Park.

Theatre season begins in May and continues onto September.

Film 4 Summer Screen at Somerset House

Imagine yourself itting out in the open air and enjoying a film under the sky. Film 4 at Somerset house is a real treat and tickets always sell out quickly so if you’re looking for something unique and fun to do in London start booking your tickets asap! The films are brought to you as vividly as if you were in a state of the art cinema, and the line up is always pretty impressive.

Open Garden Squares Weekend

Coming to London in June? Well if you find yourself in London on the 14/15th of June then make sure book yourself a ticket to open garden squares Weekend. It’s your ticket to some of London’s best and beautiful gardens and some of which are not available to the general public.

World Street Food Festival 2014, 18th – 21st April

In April take a trip along London’s Southbank and visit The World Street Festival. The festival will showcase the very best and most creative street food in London. On offer there will also be a craft Beer, Wine and Cocktail Bar as well as Live Music. It’s the best way to taste the variety of food from around the world that’s available in London and its all in one place.

So there you have it my pick of events in London this spring and summer.

Anyway I’m back and it’s August people! How fast is this year flying by! Observations aside it looks like this weekend will be fine weather wise so time to get up out and about. Here are some of my picks of things to this weekend in London.

Love Cycling? then head down to Prudential Ride London Saturday 3rd August 2013

Give your liver a break. Visit the Redemption Alcohol-Free Bar at Netil House in Hackney – Sunday

It’s funny I had an idea for setting up an alcohol free bar a few years ago but thought it would never catch on. The Redemption pop up is an alcohol free bar with great food and live DJs.  It starts on Sunday in Netil House, and runs every Sunday for the summer from 11am – 10pm.

Watch Hamlet in Brixton Car Park – Sunday 4th Aug

In terms of interesting pop ups, South London keeps coming up trumps. This pop up idea is a bit random but it’s definitely worth a visit. Every Sunday and Monday evening throughout August Brixton car park will host a version of Hamlet where the main character in this interpretation is Brixton itself.  Tickets cost 10 pounds – bring a blanket or 15 pounds  for seating.

Pizza East Kentish Town’s Valentine’s Day Card Amnesty

With every Valentine’s Day comes an inevitable bad card. Whether it’s a droopy-eyed puppy on the front, a sickly message written inside or even a dreaded mystery sender, we all know what to expect on February 14th.

From Wednesday 13th until Friday 15th February, Pizza East  Kentish Town will be offering customers the unique opportunity to hand over their Valentine’s Day cards for a £5 Margerita Pizza and swap some emotional cheese for hot, stringy Mozzarella.

Located on Highgate Road in between Gospel Oak and Kentish Town tube stations, Pizza East Kentish Town serves rustic pizzas made from traditional, seasonal ingredients. All pizzas are made with a ciabatta-style, slow-proved dough that is made in-house every day.

Guests will be taken on an after-hours tour of the museum where they’ll get to see many of the museum’s amazing exhibits, including a first edition of Darwin’s seminal ‘The Origin of Species’ and the first specimens he collected as he began to formulate his theory.

Mastercard Priceless London with James Morrison

Last Thursday Lanky girl and Co was lucky enough to receive an invite to James Morrison’s gig for MasterCard Priceless London at Stamford Bridge’s live music venue in Chelsea. For those of you who don’t know what MasterCard Priceless London is about, MasterCard holders get exclusive free access to events in London. Events range from West End shows to concerts by international stars like James Morrison. Once you have registered you will receive emails when they have events and all you have to do is get in there and sign up!

Now for the concert, I have to admit that even though I had heard of a few of James’s big hits like “You Give Me Something” I wasn’t sure that I would like enough of his music to stand 90 mins of it. Fortunately James was spectacular, his performance was energetic and his voice amazing. We didn’t want him to stop singing! The best thing about the venue was how modern and intimate it was. Because there were only 400 tickets for the event there was enough room to see the stage without the usual pushing and shoving. Also how many gigs do you go to that the food and drink is free? We had the pleasure of tasting an array of canapes, mini fish and chips was my favourite.

Oh and best of all was getting to meeting James backstage with the rest of the competition winners. Will post the picture we took when I get them 🙂
