Check out the new topiary sculptures at the East Village – Stratford

On Monday morning I had the opportunity of revisiting the East Village in Stratford in order to checkout  the new Neighbours sculptures by artist Piers Dubois de Saran of Shipshape Art. The sculptures will be joining the two sculptures pictured below  known as ‘Little Boy’ and ‘Old Woman’ which came from the clean up after the London riots in 2011 and the idea that “if every man would sweep his own doorstep, the city would soon be clean”.

If you remember in a previous post, I had the opportunity to go on a tour of the East Village development. A  lot has changed since then, Chobham Academy is now open and some of the residents have already moved in. In March Queen Elizabeth Park will be opening to the public to enjoy the velopark, aquatic centre and acres of green space. I’m quite looking forward to when all the rest of the people and shops arrive, then it will really feel alive.

Look to the future

Keeping your financial affairs in order is just part of being an adult in today’s modern world; it’s easy to lose track of incomings and outgoings when we pay for everything by card – and credit cards are all too easy to come by. While thinking about this, I came across a notice for a fun, live event that Experian – those people you might go to if you’re in need of a Experian credit report  – are putting on in the Westfield Shopping Centre, White City this coming weekend 17-19th January.

It’s called the Experian Field of Dreams  and it looks set to go viral. Experian will be setting up a tree in the centre of the Westfield Shopping Centre, White City, and encouraging shoppers and passers-by to write their financial wishes for 2014 onto pieces of paper and attach them to the tree. Wishmakers will be invited to post their pictures of the tree to Twitter with the hashtag #My2014Dream, as well as being entered into a prize draw to win £500. There is also a Facebook app too, where you can plant your dreams to be in for a chance of winning a daily prize of £150, every week day until the 24th January 2014.
It sounds like a bit of fun, but it also made me think about my financial wishes for 2014; while a ‘wish’ might be all too flimsy and fairytale, we can all do things to make our wishes come true in real life. I’m sure most of us would like to save more and spend less, but I wouldn’t want to do that at the cost of living my life to the fullest. The best I can hope for in 2014 is to make wise spending choices and hopefully add to my savings even if just a little.

The Experian Field of Dreams event, which will be running over three days in January, will no doubt get a lot of shoppers thinking about their financial hopes for 2014, too; and what better time of the year to do it than in January? Of course, some of you will already have thought long and hard about your 2014 financial wishes, and you might have even made it your New Year’s Resolution this year. Well, the good news is that a recent survey by Fidelity Investments suggested that New Year’s resolutions about money were easier to keep than most others – or so say 39% of adults.

No doubt this is the time of year that many of us will be checking our credit reports as we make big plans for spending and investment over the coming twelve months; will 2014 be your year for a new bathroom, a new car, or are you planning on saving every penny you can? You can always tell me what your financial wish is for 2014 – or, if you’re going to be in the Westfield Shopping Centre this January, why not tell it to the tree?

Date For Your Diary: Patrick Thomas 100BPM Exhibition at the Hang Up Gallery, 1 Feb

patrick-thomas-art

British graphic artist Patrick Thomas with be exhibiting at the Hang Up Gallery from 1 Feb – 16th March 2014.

Silkscreened bold heart ideograms combined with found imagery and collage will be a recurring motif throughout the exhibition, which is timed to coincide with Valentines Day.

100 BPM will be the artist’s first solo exhibition in London since 2008 and first time that this collection will be shown publicly.

The majority of works on show will be limited editions and unique pieces created using free-form screen printing and collage, a technique which the artist has been investigating over the past 18 months in Berlin and Barcelona. This work explores the area between the unique artwork and the edition. A selection of prints will be perforated with a laser cutter to simulate arrow shots. Several will have real arrows embedded into the gallery walls.

If you’re looking for some great art to liven up your walls don’t miss this!

A night at the Hip Hop Karaoke – The Social – On thursdays

image

My younger sister who I have to admit is much cooler than I give her credit for, recently introduced me to Hip Hop Karaoke nights at The Social bar/club  in the West End. Last Thursday we went down to check it out. Hip hop karaoke is a night for all lover’s of the hip hop genre. If you ever fancied yourself as a bit of a Nicky Minaj or Tupac Shakur or even Eminem then this the night for you. Hosted by the effervescent and potty mouthed (be prepared for the F word being used a lot!) Bobby Champagne Jr, the night began with us arriving way too early.

We arrived there at 7 and found the place a bit dead, I would advise getting there at 8.30pm in order to secure yourself a seat and table as by the time it started at 9pm the place was rammed. And when I say rammed I mean rammed! Hip Hop Karaoke is based in the basement of The Social so at times it felt like we were a standing in a  bit of a hot box. (towards the back there is more aircon). At the beginning of the night we were invited to sign up and choose from the list of popular Hip hop classics.

Hip Hop Karaoke has a  a firm no booing policy so even if you’re not the best singer/rapper no one is going to tear you down for giving it a try. During the night we were entertained by the likes of Wannabe Eminems, kanye West and Missy Eliot. I was surprised how emotional some people got when they were rapping their favourite songs on stage.  The best part of the night was the lively crowd!. Although I didn’t choose to sing we left the night with big smiles and a new found appreciation for rap artists in general.

Hip Hop Karaoke is every Thursday at The Social from 9pm. Tickets are 5 pounds at the door, 4 pound on guest list.

A Review of Afternoon Tea At The Wellesley Hotel, knightsbridge

The Wellesley Hotel, Knighstbridge

First blog post of the New Year!

So in my last post I talked about how I decided to take a bit of a hiatus from blogging in January….

However, I did manage to squeeze in a trip to the Wellesley Hotel for some afternoon tea. Trying to find a place for afternoon tea close to Christmas is a bit of a mission. So we took a bit of a gamble with The Wellesley but it definitely paid off! The hotel is a fairly new addition to Knightsbridge and is situated next door to the Lanesborough Hotel. Decorated in an art deco style this place is all about detail, elegance and luxury.

We arrived on a windy and wet Sunday evening to be greeted by staff  at The Wellesley and were shown to the beautiful  Jazz lounge. Not having had the chance to check the rooms out before we had booked I was blown away by the opulent and luxurious interior, especially the larger than life chandelier ( bling bling)!

After we had settled into our seats the waiter explained to us the various types of tea and we were given the chance to  test their aromas. I opted for a black tea which had vanilla notes. This proved to be a good choice to counter the sweetness of the pastries.

Courtesy of the chef we received a surprising and very tasty extra, a strawberry pannacotta.

The afternoon tea was pretty extensive – we enjoyed a selection of homemade finger sandwiches,  assorted pastries, warm raisin & plain scones  homemade preserves & clotted cream. While we took tea we were quietly serenaded by a pianist.

For 35 pounds we thought the afternoon tea at The Wellesley was definitely worth every penny. Staff were very attentive and we had as many refills of our teapot as we needed. We couldn’t even finish the array of pastries that we were given, luckily we got to take the rest home in a goody bag!
